3 Simple Filing Guidelines

One of the most basic ways to find papers when you need them is to retrieve them from an effective filing system. A good filing system will allow you to find what you're looking for in 10 seconds or less.

Here are 3 simple filing guidelines that can help:

  1. CATEGORIZING. A filing system is only effective, if you can find everything you need, when you need it--without a struggle. And all good filing systems have different categories of papers. Your papers are either going to fall into a MAIN category, or a SUB-category.

    For example, a main category might be FINANCIAL. Some sub-categories within Financial, may be:
    • Savings Account
    • Checking Account
    • Money Market Account


In your filing cabinet, your main categories should always be hanging file folders with a labeled tab. Your sub-categories should be labeled manila file folders inside the appropriate main category hanging folder.

  1. BASIC FILING SYSTEMS. For the most part, people choose to use one, or a combination of, these basic filing systems:

o Alphabetical (A, B, C, D, etc.)

o Numerical (1, 2, 3, 4, etc.)

o Chronological (Jan, Feb, Mar, Apr, etc.)

The one you use, depends on what you're using it for. For example, if you need to keep files for all of your customers (or associates, friends, etc.), alphabetical by last name usually will work best.

For sequential case numbers or projects that are numbered, a numerical system would probably work best.

If it is necessary for you to find things by date, then chronological may be your choice.

Some people get really creative and use a combination of these systems. For example, you may want your main categories to be chronological, but the sub-categories inside to be alphabetical.

  1. LABELING. If a file isn't labeled properly, it's not going to be quick and easy to find:

o Always write your subject on the tab of the file folder, close to the top of the tab, so you can easily see it when you're looking through your files.

o Use a medium point, black marker to label your files. Print; don't use script.

o Use as few words as possible on the tab.

9 Things in Your Home That Are Making You Sick

Is your home the safest place to stay? Think about these:

Your kitchen sponge


Maybe you’ve heard about the germs on your kitchen sponge (gross news flash—there may be as many as 20 million microbes on it right now). But here’s the deal: Your method for “cleaning” that sponge may be leaving it loaded with potentially hazardous bacteria that can make you ill. Researchers at the USDA’s Agricultural Research Service found that some common cleaning methods for sponges—soaking them in a bleach solution, lemon juice or water—did not eradicate the germs.

What to do: The best ways to clean a dirty sponge, they say, are in the microwave (on high for one minute) and in the dishwasher, which will kill 99.9 percent of all germs.

Your boyfriend's wet towel

Sharing a bath towel with your man may be good for the environment, but it may be bad for your health, experts warn. MRSA, a drug-resistant form of staph—also known as the superbug—is frequently transmitted by skin-to-skin contact but also by sharing personal items like towels.

What to do: “While it may be tempting to share a towel with your guy, resist the urge,” says Susan C. Taylor, M.D., community editor for bewell.com. “I warn my patients that wet towels can be a breeding ground for germs, including MRSA, which can make you sick.”

After you or your man uses a towel, send it where it belongs: to the washing machine.

Your bed

Have you been on a trip recently? If so, you may have brought home some hitchhikers—of the creepy-crawly variety. Bedbugs, tiny bloodthirsty insects, are hosts to organisms that cause hepatitis B and Chagas disease, say health experts. But the real problem seems to be the infections and allergic reactions that can sometimes result from bedbug bites.

According to the Environmental Protection Agency, bedbugs are on the rise and becoming an increasing health problem. The insects, which hide in the crevices of mattresses and bedding, are showing up everywhere, from hostels to the swankiest hotels, and they often find their way into people’s luggage, transporting themselves to unsuspecting homes.

What to do: If you’ve done some traveling recently, and especially if you’ve noticed any mysterious bug bites, wash everything in your luggage and consider scrubbing your suitcase with a stiff brush before giving it a good vacuuming.

Your laptop

You’re the only one who uses it, so how dirty can it be? In a word: filthy. A study by researchers at the University of North Carolina Health Care System found that keyboards were loaded with germs.

Even more disgusting, the average public toilet bowl contains 41 germs per square inch. The average personal keyboard? Some 21,000 germs per square inch. “Toilet bowls get cleaned,” says Philip M. Tierno Jr., Ph.D., director of clinical microbiology and immunology at New York University Langone Medical Center, “but keyboards rarely do.”

What to do: Tierno says the best way to keep your laptop or computer’s keyboard clean is to gently wipe it down daily with disinfecting wipes.

Your shower curtain

According to research by the Center for Health, Environment & Justice, shower curtains and liners made from polyvinyl chloride (PVC) may be harmful to your health.
Their study suggests that PVC releases potentially harmful chemicals into your bathroom. While there is still some debate among health experts about how much of these chemicals could be deemed harmful, many believe that limiting your exposure to chemicals, wherever possible, makes sense.

What to do: Check your shower curtain’s label to see if it’s made of vinyl or PVC. While not all manufacturers disclose this information, some retailers, like Ikea, have banned PVC shower curtains altogether, and Target has promised to phase out the material in its shower-curtain products in the months ahead.

Your laundry

Nobody thinks of the washing machine as a germ magnet—that’s where clothes get clean, right? Not if you’re using a public machine, and especially if that machine uses water that’s not hot enough, says Tierno.

Here’s why: Lower temperatures can encourage the spread of germs. Researchers at the University of Arizona found that intestinal viruses such as hepatitis A can be easily transferred from underwear to other garments during the washing process. Even worse, some germs can lurk in public washing machines and find their way to your clothes.

What to do: Wash your underwear and towels separately, using bleach if possible, and wash all towels in water that’s at least 155 degrees, which will kill most germs. Not sure if your apartment’s water temperature is hot enough? Talk to the building manager.

Your humidifier

Watch out for the humidifier, say germ experts. “If it’s not cleaned properly, a humidifier can become a repository for legionella and other pathogens that cause respiratory infections,” says Tierno.

What to do: If you like sleeping with a humidifier in your room, be sure to clean it often—at least a few times a week—by mixing a solution of one-part bleach to 19 parts water (for most humidifiers, this would equal about a half or full cup of bleach) and letting it sit for a few minutes before rinsing well.

Your doorknob

Think of the people who have touched your front doorknob in the past 48 hours: the UPS man, a neighbor, a solicitor, your friends—it’s easy to lose count. Now think of all the places they’ve been—the subway, public restrooms, grocery stores. Those germs are all on your doorknob right now, says Tierno.

Most people let their guard down when it comes to their own door handles, he says, but we shouldn’t: “Viruses can survive for days on doorknobs, and you can easily get cross contamination from them,” he says.

What to do: Make a habit of wiping down your doorknob frequently with sanitizing wipes or sprays. Have a copper doorknob? You may be in luck. Researchers in England found that copper door handles had 95 percent fewer microorganisms on them compared with other doorknobs. Scientists believe that many germs, including MRSA, may not be able to survive on copper.

Your salt and pepper shakers

When’s the last time you cleaned your salt and pepper shakers? Exactly. These unassuming little items get touched in all parts of the meal-prep process. Example: You give your sauce a dash of salt after touching raw chicken (oops) and then later set the shaker on the table.

What to do: Nobody thinks of cleaning their salt and pepper shakers, says Elizabeth Scott, Ph.D., assistant professor and co-director Simmons Center for Hygiene and Health in Home and Community at Simmons College, but to avoid cross-contamination and food poisoning, you should. “Best to wipe them with an EPA-registered disinfectant,” she says. “But better still, always wash your hands after handling raw foods and before touching anything else.”

8 Ways to Make Flowers Last Longer

I got this article from rd.com and I find this very helpful for the flower vendors and those who are decorating their homes, offices, establishments and other areas with fresh flowers.
Preserve fresh flowers and enhance the length of their beauty and aroma.

Aspirin
It's a tried-and-true way to keep roses and other cut flowers fresh longer: Put a crushed aspirin in the water before adding your flowers. I tried this on my flowers during my birthday and they lasted for more than one week.

Other household items that you can put in the water to extend the life of your flower arrangements include: a multivitamin, a teaspoon of sugar, a pinch of salt and baking soda, and even a copper penny. Also, don't forget to change the vase water every few days.

Bleach
Freshly cut flowers will stay fresh longer if you add 1/4 teaspoon bleach per quart (1 liter) of vase water. Another popular recipe calls for 3 drops bleach and 1 teaspoon sugar in 1 quart (1 liter) water. This will also keep the water from getting cloudy and inhibit the growth of bacteria.

Coins
Your posies and other cut flowers will stay fresh longer if you add a copper penny and a cube of sugar to the vase water.

Hair Spray
A bouquet of cut flowers is such a beautiful thing, you want to do whatever you can to postpone wilting. Just as it preserves your hairstyle, a spritz of hair spray can preserve your cut flowers. Stand a foot away from the bouquet and give them a quick spray, just on the undersides of the leaves and petals.

Soda Pop
Don't throw away those last drops of soda pop. Pour about 1/4 cup into the water in a vase full of cut flowers. The sugar in the soda will make the blossoms last longer. Note: If you have a clear vase and want the water to remain clear, use a clear soda pop, such as Sprite or 7-Up.

Sugar
Make your own preservative to keep cut flowers fresh longer. Dissolve 3 tablespoons sugar and 2 tablespoons white vinegar per quart (liter) of warm water. When you fill the vase, make sure the cut stems are covered by 3-4 inches (7-10 centimeters) of the prepared water. The sugar nourishes the plants, while the vinegar inhibits bacterial growth. You'll be surprised how long the arrangement stays fresh!

Vinegar
Everyone likes to keep cut flowers around as long as possible, and there are several good methods. One way is to mix 2 tablespoons apple cider vinegar and 2 tablespoons sugar with the vase water before adding the flowers. Be sure to change the water (with more vinegar and sugar, of course) every few days to enhance your flowers' longevity.

Vodka
The secret to keeping cut flowers looking good as long as possible is to minimize the growth of bacteria in the water and to provide nourishment to replace what the flower would have gotten had it not been cut. Add a few drops of vodka (or any clear spirit) to the vase water for antibacterial action along with 1 teaspoon sugar. Change the water every other day, refreshing the vodka and sugar each time.

Extraordinary Uses of Baby Oil

Don't be fooled into thinking baby oil is just for your kids -- it has uses that will surprise you!


Remove a bandage
You can eliminate -- or at least, significantly lessen -- the "ouch" factor, and subsequent tears, when removing a youngster's bandage by first rubbing some baby oil into the adhesive parts on top and around the edges. If you see the bandage working loose, let the child finish the job to help him overcome his fear. Adults who have sensitive or fragile skin may also want to try this.


Make your own bath oil
Do you have a favorite perfume or cologne? You can literally bathe in it by making your own scented bath oil. Simply add a few drops of your scent of choice to 1/4 cup baby oil in a small plastic bottle. Shake well, and add it to your bath.


Buff up your golf clubs
Don't waste your money on fancy cleaning kits for your chrome-plated carbon steel golf club heads. Just keep a small bottle filled with baby oil in your golf bag along with a chamois cloth or towel. Dab a few drops of oil on the cloth and polish the head of your club after each round of golf.


Slip off a stuck ring
Is that ring jammed on your finger again? First lubricate the ring area with a generous amount of baby oil. Then swivel the ring around to spread the oil under it. You should be able to slide the ring off with ease.


Get scratches off dashboard plastic
You can disguise scratches on the plastic lens covering the odometer and other indicators on your car's dashboard by rubbing over them with a bit of baby oil.


Remove latex paint from skin
Did you get almost as much paint on your face and hands as you did on the bathroom you just painted? You can quickly get latex paint off your skin by first rubbing it with some baby oil, followed by a good washing with soap and hot water.


Treat cradle cap
Cradle cap may be unsightly, but it is a common, usually harmless, phase in many babies' development. To combat it, gently rub in a little baby oil, and lightly comb it through your baby's hair. If your child gets upset, comb it a bit at a time, but do not leave the oil on for more than 24 hours. Then, thoroughly wash the hair to remove all of the oil. Repeat the process in persistent cases. Note: If you notice a lot of yellow crusting, or if the cradle cap has spread behind the ears or on the neck, contact your pediatrician instead.

There are currently about 653 reported cases of swine flu at the US and two deaths. I have no doubt there will be more cases, and we have no clue just how much of an impact swine flu will have on our society. There's no need for panic, but there's absolutely no question that everyone would benefit from strengthening their immune systems during this uncertain time to minimize the likelihood of infection.

It's important to follow all the same advice we've ever heard about staying healthy during flu season. Wash your hands often, avoid exposure to infected people, cover your mouth and nose with a tissue (not your hands) when you cough or sneeze, drink plenty of water, and get plenty of fresh air.

There are also a few other steps I recommend you can take to help keep your immune system bullet proof.

Promote and Restore Healthy Acid/Alkaline Balance

Overacidity can cause nasal and bronchial congestion and inflammation as well as depressed immune function, making you more susceptible to the flu and other infections. This state can be caused by the highly acidic diet that most people eat, stress, travel, and even the change of seasons. Unless you're one of the rare individuals who is naturally alkaline, restoring your body to a more healthful, slightly alkaline state is one of the most important steps you can take to boost your immunity.

If you start to feel the signs of a cold or flu coming on, immediately take 1/2 teaspoon of sodium bicarbonate (baking soda) in water (increase to one teaspoon if symptom relief does not occur). Do this three to five times per day.

Because acids tend to accumulate during the night, it's a good idea to keep this solution in a closed container by your bed so that you can sip on it whenever you wake up. (If you experience a tingling sensation in the extremities, feel over-energized, are unable to sleep, or experience muscle spasms, stop taking the baking soda immediately. To rebalance your system, take a teaspoon or two of apple cider vinegar or half a lemon in water. Restart the bicarb the following day at a lower level.)

Ironically, some of the more traditional cold and flu fighters--orange juice and ginger ale--actually make you more acidic. Opt instead for lots of water, which helps neutralize acidity. In addition, drink plenty of herbal teas (ginger and peppermint are especially good), and vegetable or chicken broth. Fasting on these liquids for the first day or two will also give your liver a much-needed rest as it works round-the-clock to combat infections and speed recovery.

Reduce Inflammation, Fight Infection, and Boost Immunity

In addition, no matter what your body pH, add the following nutritional supplements to your daily program at the first sign of cold or flu symptoms. These will support your body's immune system as it fights infection.

Colloidal silver

While studying regeneration of limbs, spinal cords and organs in the late 1970s, Robert O. Becker, M.D., author of The Body Electric, discovered that silver ions promote bone growth and kill surrounding bacteria. Research indicates that colloidal silver may be a natural antibiotic and preventive against bacterial, viral, and fungal infections by disabling the enzyme that these one-celled pathogens need for oxygen metabolism. It has also shown promise against sinus and ear infections.

Take two dropperfuls of colloidal silver (5-10 parts per million potency) every two to four hours for an acute infection, decreasing to every six to eight hours as symptoms abate. Swish the solution in your mouth for 60 seconds before swallowing to enhance absorption.

Colostrum

This "first milk" produced by all mammals after delivery of their newborn is crucial to initiating the immune response in many species. A number of studies have found colostrum to be helpful in the treatment of diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis, endometriosis, allergies, colds, and herpes infections.

Take 500 mg twice a day, in capsule form, on an empty stomach. Make sure it contains only colostrum or acidophilus, as other ingredients can interfere with absorption.

Echinacea

This root has long been used in traditional botanical medicine for its immune-enhancing properties. It works by increasing the number of phagocytes, specialized cells that surround and engulf pathogens, and stimulates other "killer" cells, such as T and B lymphocytes. In short, echinacea can not only make colds shorter and less severe, it can sometimes stop a cold that is just starting.

I suggest taking 10-30 drops of a 1 percent echinacoside liquid extract three times daily. (Many herbalists believe that part of the herb's benefit comes from direct contact with the tissues at the back of the throat.) Take echinacea no longer than eight weeks at a stretch, and do not use it if you have an autoimmune condition.

Mineral-Buffered Vitamin C

Over the years, I have found vitamin C very useful for shortening the course of colds and flu in many of my patients. In addition to its antiviral and antibacterial benefits, vitamin C also enhances your immune function by supporting white blood cell activity and function and increasing antibody levels.

According to a 1994 study from the International Journal of Vitamin and Nutrition Research, just 200 mg of vitamin C a day helped elderly patients with either severe acute bronchitis and pneumonia. Researchers also found that those patients who received vitamin C fared much better than those who simply received the placebo. Furthermore, those patients who were most severely ill received the greatest benefit from the vitamin.

I recommend starting with moderate doses, such as 500-1,000 mg, one to three times daily. You can work up to as much as 5,000-10,000 mg (5-10 grams) a day. If you reach "bowel tolerance" (loose stools), level off and even decrease your dosage.

Selenium

In addition to promoting healthy detoxification, selenium also augments and restores immune function. Studies show that it does this by stimulating white blood cell growth and thymus function. Additionally, selenium deficiency has been shown to weaken immune function and inhibit your body's ability to resist infection. I recommend taking 200 mcg of selenium (as selenomethionine) once a day.

*** A healthy diet and daily exercise are also critical in keeping your immune system bullet proof. Now I'm not saying that any of these steps are going to stop or cure swine flu, but a healthy immune system is a fantastic weapon!
